This plaque marks the site of the Newtown State School opened on 17th July 1882.

Occupancy ceased in December 1915 with the pupils moving into a new school at Silkstone in January 1916.  

Plaque unveiled on 5th June 1982 by Mrs. Leonore Grieve (nee Cooper) and Mrs. Olga Lawrie (nee Woolley)
