The garden commemorates the centenary of the Stanthorpe branch of the Red Cross.  It was the first country branch of the Red Cross in Queensland.

STANTHORPE, September 6. A meeting of Stanthorpe ladies took place on Wednesday in connection with a Red Cross movement. There was a good attendance. The chair was taken by Mrs. L. Bedford Elwell, Mrs. Olive and Miss Marlay were appointed secretaries. It was decided to have collection boxes placed in various public and business places, and about £15 was collected in the room. A discussion took place on the articles to be made, and it was resolved to start sewing and knitting work, on the arrival of the necessary material, which has been ordered.
