The tree commemorates the Sister City relationship between Fremantle and Molfetta in Italy, and the Saint Day of Molfetta.

Sister cities are cooperative agreements between towns and cities, and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.

Plaque :

This Olea europaea `Tolley`s Upright` (Olive Tree) was planted on 8 February 2011 to commemorate Molfetta`s Saint Day and celebrate the sister city relationship between Molfetta, Italy and Fremantle.

Mayor Dr Brad Pettitt and the Consul of Italy Mr Adriano Antonio Tedde planted this tree on behalf of the two cities. 

Molfetta and Fremantle became Sister Cities on 6 September 1984.
