2nd / 40th Battalion Print Page
A plaque commemorates the 2nd / 40th Battalion which served in World War Two.
The 2nd/40th was the only battalion made up entirely of Tasmanian men. It was deployed to Timor in 1941, before it was overwhelmed by the larger Japanese force. Many of the 2/40th prisoners spent the first seven months of their captivity interned in a camp at Usap and were moved to work on the Burma railway or in prisons across South-East Asia including Kava, Thailand, Singapore and Sumatra.
