The gates commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two.

In May 1954, the War Memorial Committee accepted a tender of approximately £1000 for the erection of memorial gates to the fallen of the 1939 - 1945 war. At that time donations totalled £350 but the committee planned to raise the balnce with futher donations expected once the work had commenced.
