The Waiting Woman sculpture captures the personal despair of the many families, especially the wives and mothers, who lost a sailor on the H.M.A.S. Sydney II during World War Two. With the finding of the wreck of the HMAS Sydney II in 2008,  the Waiting Women now watches over her loved ones at rest.

On 19 November 1941, H.M.A.S. Sydney II was involved in a mutually destructive engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, and was lost with all 645 aboard. The wrecks of both ships were lost until 2008.
