The monument commemorates those who were killed in the crash of the Royal Australian Air Force Lockheed Hudson A16-144 of 14 Squadron on 17 January 1942.  

The aeroplane crashed and caught fire after stalling from about 120 metres after takeoff at Ceduna killing the 6 personnel on board. The aeroplane was one of four Lockheed Hudsons on a ferry flight from Laverton to Pearce in Western Australia. It crashed approximately one mile to the north east of Ceduna airfield.

Four of the airmen are buried in the Ceduna Cemetery.
