The garden was originally established as part of Australia Remembers in 1995 to commemorate those from the Bute District who died in service or were killed in action in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

On the 11th November 2005, a replica honour roll listing the names of those from the District who served in these conflicts was added to the garden.

"Australia Remembers, 1945-1995" was a program of activities organised by the Federal Government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
