The park commemorates those who served in World War Two.

The park and a group of war memorials were officially opened and unveiled by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, on 16 August 1956. 

The gates of the park were erected by the Kilpatrick family in memory of Flight Lieutenant William Robert Kilpatrick, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed in air operations over Boulogne on 31st July 1943 during World War Two.
