The memorial commemorates those of the United States 41st Infantry Division who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two. The division was based at Camp Caves near Rockhampton during World War Two. 

The 41st Infantry Division, nicknamed the ―Jungleers ‖ and previously called the Sunset Division, was activated on September 16, 1940 from the National Guard Division of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. It served in the Pacific theatre during the Second World War and participated in the New Guinea, Southern Philippines, and Papuan campaigns
