WW1 Honour Board Enlistments 2
WW1 Honour Board Enlistments 2

Photographs supplied by Diane Watson

The honour roll commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. Two large wooden honour boards in the vicinity commemorate those who enlisted from Ipswich.

The World War One Honour Roll in the 1920s was housed in the memorial 'crypt' or honour chamber. It contained the marble honour roll of those who had made the supreme sacrifice and was flanked by rifles on either side. The timber honour boards containing the names of those who had enlisted from Ipswich were on opposite walls. The marble honour board is now flanked on either side by the World War Two Honour Boards.

An adverstisment appeared in the Queensland Times, Ipswich on 25th June 1921 calling for all soldiers and sailors who had enlisted in World War One to forward their names for inclusion on the Soldier's Memorial Hall Honour Roll. Those names of the fallen were to be inscribed on a marble slab while the names of those who enlisted were to be placed on a wooden honour roll with gilt lettering. The rolls were to be placed in the chief vestibule of the building.
