The Memorial Avenue was established to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in both World Wars. The Memorial Avenue was approved by the Minister for Lands on the 6th of July 1949.

On Wednesday, July 6, Chidlow held Arbor Day celebrations and unveiling of the new Avenue of Honor to fallen soldiers. The name is to be Memorial Avenue. A large number of old residents of the district were invited to attend, also clergy and Road Board members. Mr. Proudfoot, Vice-Chairman of the Board, officiated in the unveiling of the Memorial Board, and Mr. Perkins had the honor of planting the first tree, after which school-children went ahead planting other trees in the avenue. During the ceremony the local children rendered songs and the Rev. Watts addressed the gathering.
