The Townsville Cenotaph commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The monument, in the form of a clocktower, originally commemorated those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.  The monument was financed by public subscription, and was designed and constructed by monumental masons Melrose and Fenwick of Townsville.

The design had been finalised by September 1923, and the monument was completed by ANZAC Day 1924, when it was unveiled and dedicated by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan.  The clock has been replaced by copper plaques bearing the badges of Australian fighting services. Around the outer perimeter of the memorial are 27 small plinths holding bronze plaques.

Front Inscription

Erected to the glorious memory of the brave men and boys of Townsville who gave their lives in the Great War

1914 - 1918

"The moments pass ; but neèr shall die
The memory of our honoured dead,
Who, marching whither duty led,
With death met Immortality."

The names of those who paid the price
For us, and for the land we love,
Be beacon-fires to all who move
On lowlier ways of sacrifice :
