The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two. A plaque was added at a later date to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action the Korean War, Malaya and Borneo conflicts and the Vietnam War

The metal arch over the monument commemorates World Wars One and Two and lists the names of those who died in service or were killed in action on both sides of the arch.
