The monument commemorates those from the Longreach and Ilfracombe District who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.  It was originally built to commemorate those who served in World War One.

Two walls at the rear of the memorial which were unveiled in 2007 acknowledge the Kindred Association of Longreach and conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The walls were originally situated at the entrance to the memorial.

The unveiling of the Longreach War Memorial was performed by the Chairman of the Longreach Shire Council, Councillor R.L. H. Peterson on the 25th April 1927.   The memorial was to be unveiled by Colonel Cameron C.M.G., D.S.O., but he was prevented from making the long trip to Longreach by his doctors after he aggravated a war wound. The memorial was erected by Mr F.H. Allen, Stonemason of Rockhampton.
The Longreach Leader (QLD ) Friday 29 April 1927.
