The monument commemoratse those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two. An additional plaque has been added to commemorate Post World War Two campaigns. In 2005 the statue of a digger was installed as part of the restoration of the Cenotaph.

Plans have been finalised in Charters Towers for the erection of a war memorial. Expected to cost in the vicinity of £1000, the memorial is to be built in the middle of Gill Street opposite the hospital gates. The monument is 9ft square at the base and 20ft high. At the very top will burn an electric lamp, shaded as a flame of remembrance. The memorial was to be in honour of the dead of two world wars 1914-18, and 1939-45.
