The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. An additional marble plaque was added at a later date to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action duringWorld War Two.

Additional commemorative plaques have been added  since 1989 with the plaque paying tribute to those who served in South East Asia campaigns being unveiled on ANZAC Day 1989.

Two black granite walls have been placed behind the memorial listing the conflicts that Australia has fought in since the Boer War.
