A monument commemorates Special Air Service Regiment members who have died in service or been killed in action.  The monument lists eighteen soldiers and air crew who died in a mid-air helicopter crash during a training exercise near Townsville in 1996.

On 12 June 1996, Australia's worst military air disaster in peacetime occurred near Townsville, North Queensland. Two Army Blackhawk helicopters collided in mid-air and, as a result, 18 soldiers lost their lives. A further ten soldiers were injured. Fifteen of the dead were members of the Special Air Service Regiment.
