The War Memorial was originally erected in memory of those who lost their lives in both World Wars. Additional inscriptions were placed on the memorial to commemorate Korea, Malaya and Vietnam.

The unveiling of the Newport War Memorial in the Gardens Reserve (opposite railway station) Newport will take place on Sunday, April 1st, at 3 p.m. The ceremony will be performed by Lieut.-General Sir Stanley Savige, KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED. His worship the Mayor, Cr. H. Armstrong, will preside. The appeal committee extends a cordial invitation to all to be present at the ceremony.
