Photographs supplied by Graeme Saunders

A plaque which was at the base of a tree planted to commemorate those who served with the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 5th, 6th, 7th and 22nd Companies during World War One.  The tree was planted on the 4th August 1934 and was No. 67 in the ballot and was planted by Mr. L. Nathan.

The 2nd Machine Gun Battalion was formed in 1918 and consolidated the Machine Gun Companies of the three brigades within the Division; the 5th, 6th and 7th. and the 22nd Machine Gun Company (the latter being one of five numbered 21- 25 raised to give each Division an extra MG Company).

One of the most picturesque ceremonies yet held at the Shrine of Remembrance will take place on Saturday, 4th August, when nearly 100 trees will be planted along the main approaches - on the city side. Each tree will represent a Victorian unit or association, and each will be planted by a representative of the unit concerned after a brief, address at 3 p.m. by the chairman of the shrine trustees (Sir H. Chauvel) at the intersection of the main approach and Government House drive. The position of the trees for each unit was selected by ballot.
Age (Melbourne), 24 July 1934.
