The War Memorial was originally erected in memory of those from the district who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. The names of the fallen of World War Two were added to the memorial at a later date.  

It was unveiled on the 6th February 1923 by Lieutenant-Colonel N. M. Freeman, D.S.O.
