The monument was erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.

The names of those who who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two were added at a later date. 

A plaque commemorating King George V is also located on the monument. 

At Balmoral on Friday afternoon a monument that has been erected to memorialise the district soldiers who fell in the war was unveiled in the presence of a large assemblage. Cr. M. R. Wood presided, and the unveiliing ceremony was performed by Mr. A. S . Rogers, M.H.R, Sir Walter Manifold M.L.C., and the Rev. J.L. King also delivered addresses.
