The monument was originally erected to commemorate those from the District who died in service or were killed in action during World War One.

It now commemorates those who served in all wars and conflicts. Funds were received in 2013 for the restoration of the monument.

The work in connection with the Soldiers' Memorial Monument has now been completed. The monument, which is the work of Messrs. Talochino & Son, Benalla, has been erected in a central position in the town. At a public meeting held on Wednesday night it was decided to have the monument, officially unveiled on Saturday, February 24.
