The memorial was unveiled as part of "Australia Remembers" in 1995 and commemorates merchant mariners who have died in service or have been killed in action in times of conflict.

"Australia Remembers, 1945 - 1995" was a program of activities organised by the Federal Government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

A 4775 tonne Australian registered merchant ship.  Attacked by a Japanese submarine off Norah Head,
3rd of June 1942.

Plaque :

The Nimbin

A 1067 tonne Sydney registered, merchant ship sunk by a mine off Norah Head,
5th of December 1949,
7 lives lost.

Plaque :

The Iron Chieftain

A 4877 tonne Australian cargo vessel sunk by a Japanese submarine off Norah Head,
3rd of June 1942.
12 lives lost.
