The mural commemorates servicemen and women from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley who served in in World War Two, the Korean War, the Malaya conflict and the Vietnam War.

This memorial was dedicated by Alfred, Tenth Bishop of Newcastle on 11th November, 1982.

In memory of all those who served from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, in World War II, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam and to those who supported them.

Description of War Memorial Mural by Reinis Zusters

Center Panel (3) Jesus Christ blessing the dead soldier.

Left and right-side panels incorporate the death masks of a man and of a woman who have lost their lives through the war.

Panel 1 Tank fragments and parts of machinery are depicted also a soldier being helped from the battle-field.

Panel 2 Soldiers from the Newcastle District, The Bell Tower of Christ Church Cathedral, and the Newcastle Harbour with its steelworks.

Panel 4 The Hunter Valley District with the people who supported the war effort.

Panel 5 The Australian woman in war.  Mother and wife grieving for her lost son and husband.

The large black cross throughout the mural is used symbolically and to unify the whole concept and design.
