The War Memorial commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

The memorial was originally dedicated in 1949 in memory of those from Ku-Ring-Gai Municipality who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two. In 1978, in the Golden Jubilee of the Shire, the memorial was named the Ku-Ring-Gai War Memorial and dedicated in remembrance of those from the district who gave their lives in all conflicts.

A plaque and insignia were added to the memorial, on the 12th November 1989, in memory of those from the Merchant Navy who paid the supreme sacrifice. An additional plaque was added in 1993 commemorating the 75th anniversary of the World War One Armistice and the entombment of the Unknown Soldier in 1993.

His Excellency the Governor, attended by Flight-Lieutenant R. B. Nash, A.D.C., yesterday afternoon unveiled a war memorial erected in remembrance of the men and women of the Municipality of Ku-ring-gai who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II.
