The flagpole commemorates Lieutenant Mary Ransom and members of the Australian Army Nursing Service who served overseas in conflicts in which Australia has been involved. 
 
Lieutenant Mary Ransom was a member of the Australian Army Nursing Service and served as a wartime nurse and in the Royal Flying Doctors service. She received an Order of Australia (OAM) in 1977 for her services to nursing.
