The obelisk commemorates the eight service personnel from the District who died in service or were killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.

The obelisk has been relocated three times.

Perhaps the most interesting, as well as the most important function held at Ulverstone on Boxing Day, was the unveiling of the memorial erected by public subscription to the memory of the men who enlisted from the Third Battalion to serve in the South African war. They were all well and favourably known amongst the residents of the Coast, and it was therefore most surprising that a large concourse had assembled to take part in the memory.

Dr. McCall M.H.A., addressing Colonel Legge, said he had been requested by the subscribers and committee to request him to unveil the memorial which they had erected, and to convey to him an expression of the goodwill of the men of the Third Battalion on this, the eve of his retirement, from the responsible position he had held for so many years in connection with the defence forces of the state.
