The monument was erected by public subscription to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.

A meeting of the gentlemen who have in hand the selection of a suitable memorial for the south-eastern soldiers who fell in the Boer war was held tonight. Mr Howland presided. Several designs of monuments were received, and the meeting selected one sent in by Mr. J. T. Topham of this town. It will be about 20 ft. high. The base, 9 ft. in diameter at the ground, will be of red dolomite and the shaft of granite, with marble slabs inlaid to receive inscriptions It is estimated to cost £140 to £160.
