The monument commemorates Theodor Julius Klaffer, Alexander W. Nicholas and Captain Malcolm George Patrick Hipwell who died in service or were killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.

Corporal Theodor Klaffer died on 12 October 1900 at Wynberg, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.

Trooper Alexander Nicholas was killed in action on 24 July 1900 at Stinkhontboom, South Africa.

Captain Malcolm Hipwell died on 25 May 1901 at Kroonstad, South Africa.

The memorial was unveiled on the 18th November 1901 by Mrs Gilbert of Pewsey Vale. The memorial was suggested when the town mourned the death of local resident Trooper Nicholas in the Boer War. It was then decided to add the names of former residents of the town, Corporal Klaffer and Captain Hipwell, to the memorial. The memorial was originally erected on a hill overlooking the township.
