The monument originally commemorated those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. It was unveiled on the 25th April 1927 by Mr. J. Minnis, a former Mayor of Blackall and a returned soldier.
The honour roll of those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two was added at a later date. A Vietnam plaque was also added. The monument was rededicated on the 25th April 2009.
At a meeting of the War Memorial Committee on the 16th February 1927, the tenders for the war memorial which is to be a Cleopatra's needle type in grey granite was considered and the tender given to Petrie Brothers (Brisbane). The work was to commence immediately for unveiling on Anzac Day.
